“Planet Waves” Earth Day Outdoor Event to be held in Central City

Last Updated 4/10/2023

RenewAll Inc. announced last week that they will be co-hosting Planet Waves, with the Reuse Corridor and Village Antique Mall. The Planet Waves event is an Earth Day Maker’s Fair on April 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the side yard beside the Village Antique Mall at 610 W. 14th Street in Huntington. This is an outdoor event, free and open to the public. Event details in our calendar can be found here.

“The first Earth Day started 53 years in 1970, asking us to think globally and act locally,” said Denise Poole, coordinator for the event. “We certainly have an abundance of local environmental initiatives right here in our own backyard,” she said.  “Various artists, shop owners, and a local food business are coming together to create a wonderful event for ‘Planet Waves’ this year, and I encourage the community to attend and enjoy the event with us.”

Planet Waves will focus on a variety of upcycling activities featuring artists and the Reuse Corridor Deconstruction Team. A variety of artists and antique vendor booths will showcase how items can be reused in new designs and aesthetics. Friends and families are invited to celebrate Earth Day by heading down to the Central City District to focus on different ways to avoid waste and encourage upcycling projects.

ReUse Corridor: Tabling and Deconstruction Crew

One of the highlights of the event is the ReUse Corridor, an initiative of Coalfield Development that transforms discarded materials into beautiful and useful objects. The deconstruction crew from ReUse Corridor will have their own table and activity set up, where visitors can create a key/coat hanger and a picture frame out of wood that was deconstructed from an abandoned building. This activity demonstrates how everyday items can be repurposed and reused instead of ending up in a landfill.

In addition to the upcycling activity, the ReUse Corridor table will also feature information about the deconstruction crew, previous work they have done, and pictures and videos showcasing their process. Visitors can learn about the environmental and social benefits of deconstruction, including reducing waste, creating job opportunities, and preserving historical materials.

Kim Boley: Weaving Demonstration

Kim Boley, local Artist, will be demonstrating her weaving techniques on a loom, creating a variety of useful pieces out of scrap cloth that would usually be thrown into a landfill, such as t-shirts, old towels, washcloths, and other material which will be provided by the ReUse Corridor. Participants can watch and learn as she creates table runners, coasters, placemats, and other practical, everyday items. Boley will also be selling other items that she has made such as jewelry, repurposed hand-painted tables, and light catchers.

Martha Watson-Kessinger, Artist Vendor

Crochet Artist Martha Watson-Kessinger will be a vendor for “Planet Waves” Maker’s Fair! Martha is an accomplished fiber artist and a great addition to our event! Her handmade pieces are created in a timeless traditional method. Find decorative and utilitarian art - everything from ornaments to larger table decor. Use them, frame them, and enjoy them!

Joel Gun, Vintage Knives and Collectibles Vendor

Joel Gun will be vending vintage pocket knives and collectible toys. Don’t miss taking a look and talking with Joel - his booth will be fun, and he’s very knowledgeable about knives!
